RESETTLE REFUGEES

Most refugees who come to America arrive with little more than the clothes on their backs and a suitcase or two containing all their possessions. Many have spent years in teaming refugee camps. Nearly all have suffered enormous physical and emotional traumas. Yet they all bring with them the same hopes and dreams that accompanied previous generations of newcomers seeking the freedom and opportunities so widely recognized as "America's promise." Welcoming newcomers to the country and helping them adjust to a new homeland is what ECDC's Refugee Resettlement Program is all about.

ECDC began resettling refugees in 1991 and is the only community-based organization to be authorized by the Department of State to resettle refugees in the United States.

ECDC's affiliate network is unique in the resettlement arena, as it consists of grass-roots organizations founded by refugees to serve refugees as well as ECDC branch offices.

Initial assistance provided to refugees is funded by the Department of State's Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. The Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Refugee Resettlement's Matching Grant Program, which is a public/private partnership, provides financial support that helps refugees attain economic independence within four months after their arrival in the United States.
